Bruno Nicolai

(1926-1991)
Bruno Nicolai was born in Rome in 1926. He was a film music composer, orchestra conductor and musical editor most active in the 1960s through the 1980s.

While studying piano and composition at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, he befriended Ennio Morricone and formed a long working relationship, with Nicolai eventually conducting for and co-scoring films with Morricone. With many film music fans he is mainly known for this collaboration with Morricone, for whom he often conducted scores, among which, the most famous one "THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY".

His own extremely prolific and vastly diverse output is very sadly underappreciated. Nicolai also scored a number of giallo exploitation films and wrote a large number of scores for Spanish director Jess Franco.

Nicolai was definitely ahead of his time, venturing into diverse sound territories ranging from prog rock to experimental music with both acoustic and synthesized sounds. A true master of his trade and without any doubt a true musical genius.

He died in Rome in 1991 aged only 65, leaving a massive musical legacy.
